Ask The Expert: Interview with Dr Brendan Khong, Glowing Skin Specialist For Your Wedding Day!
Q, 1. What are the most important skincare steps couples should take in the months leading up to their wedding?
A, Using a skincare routine that is specifically tailored for each individual is vital. Everyone’s
skin is different and thus, products are also different. In all of my consultations in clinic,
skincare is thoroughly discussed and tailored to each individual. In general, I always advise
against using a foaming, stripping cleanser as this can leave the skin barrier irritated and
unhappy. In the mornings, using an antioxidant serum can help to protect the skin against
external aggressors and following with a serum that is rich in ingredients such as peptides,
ceramides and hyaluronic acid can help to support the skin. Daily SPF is vital (yes, even in
the winter).
In the evenings, it is a great idea to use products to repair the skin, using active ingredients
such as retinoids, azelaic acid, mandelic acid and so on. These ingredients help to speed up
cellular renewal, smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, fight against breakouts and stimulate
collagen and elastin production.
Q, 2. How can couples create an effective skincare routine that suits both
partners’ skin types?
A, It is so important to use products tailored specifically for each person’s skin type. A couple
can use the same gentle, non-foaming cleanser, antioxidant serum, and sun protection.
However, I would advise using a targeted serum tailored for each individual’s skin type.
Q, 3. Are there specific products or ingredients you recommend for achieving a bridal wedding day glow?
A, A healthy, dewy glow is achieved when the skin is well hydrated, even toned and bouncy.
Some of my favourite products that helps achieve this includes the Civasan sizopirin cellular
mess cream and the GSH hydro cream, both of which deeply hydrate the skin without being
greasy and sits well under makeup.
Q, 4. How far in advance should couples start their skincare preparations
before the wedding?
A, At least 1 year. Starting early is going to allow you to understand what you can and cannot
use. You do not want any trial and error a few months before your big day.
Q, 5. What common skincare issues do you see in brides and grooms, and how can they be addressed?
A, For brides, it is often sudden breakouts and dehydration. In my clinic, I offer treatments that
will help to rebalance the skin, specifically the Aerolase Neo Elite laser treatment which is a
gentle and anti-inflammatory laser that tackles issues like acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation
and more. For dehydrated skin, I offer treatments like injectable hyaluronic acid (unlike a
dermal filler) and microneedling with exosomes to deeply hydrate the skin from within.
A very common skin concern from brides is also uneven skin tone on the back of arms
(keratosis pilaris) and backne (acne on the back). To tackle keratosis pilaris and backne, I
often perform the Aerolase Neo Elite laser, followed by a gentle peel to help to improve the
texture and tone of the skin in these areas.
For grooms, the eye area is often the area that men are concerned about – hollowing, dark
circles, fine lines and wrinkles are often listed as concerns. I offer a few treatments for the
peri-orbital area, such as polynucleotide injections and undereye injections with vitamins and
amino acids – this combination helps to thicken the collagen layer and brighten the undereye
area. Uneven skin texture and pigmentation is also a common skin concerns as men tend to
suffer from oilier skin and tend to use less SPF in their youth. Treatments such as the
Aerolase Reverse Treatment, a combination of the Aerolase Neo Elite, and the Aerolase Era
Elite laser (resurfacing) can help to gently resurface the skin.
Q, 6. Can you suggest any pre-wedding treatments or facials that
are safe and effective?
A, 6 – 12 months prior to the wedding, I would recommend something like Julaine, a Poly-L-
lactic acid (PLLA) treatment that stimulates collagen. 3 treatments, performed 4 – 6 weeks
apart are recommended, and the best results are usually about several months after the 3 rd
treatment. Starting this early will allow the skin to be in the best condition for the big day.
- One of my signature treatments that I perform in clinic for a pre-event glow is the Aerolase
Neo Elite laser, gentle no downtime peel, followed by microneedling with exosomes – this
combination targets redness, refreshes the skin, hydrates the skin and stimulates collagen
and elastin for a gorgeous glow. This combination can be performed once a month, and can
even be performed a few days before the wedding.
- Other injectable treatments like Jalupro Super Hydro (an injectable moisturiser with amino
acids and vitamins), Skinvive (hyaluronic acid injections) and Meso-Wharton (peptide
mesotherapy) can be performed about 8 weeks prior to the wedding to reduce the risk of any
bruising or puffiness prior to the wedding.
- I love facials that incorporate lots of massage to release any muscular tension and to
provide a sense of relaxation, essential prior to the wedding.
Q, 7. How can couples manage stress-related skin issues during
the wedding planning process?
A, A happy and healthy mind reflects on the skin! Taking some time to spend together, going
for a walk, doing yoga or exercising together can help reduce stress and boost endorphins.

Dr. Khong’s approach combines artistry with science, ensuring that every treatment is tailored to the individual’s needs. Whether it's advanced laser treatments, or bespoke skincare regimens, he brings a fresh perspective and innovative techniques to the table. His warm and engaging personality not only puts patients at ease but also fosters a trusting relationship, allowing them to truly feel confident in their choices.
